Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge Has Given Birth To A Girl, Kensington Palace Has Announced

Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge Has Given Birth To A Girl

Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge was admitted at 6 a.m. local time (0500 GMT) Saturday to the exclusive Lindo wing at St. Mary's Hospital West London on May 2, 2015. The couple's first child, Prince George, was born July 22, 2013 at the same hospital. William, who is on leave from his job as an air ambulance pilot, was at his wife's side in the hospital, as he was for George's birth.

The baby weighs 8lbs 3oz and her father the Duke of Cambridge was also present for the birth, the palace said. The Duchess and the new baby, whose name will be announced "in due course", were both said to be doing well.

The Queen, Duke of Edinburgh, Prince of Wales, Duchess of Cornwall and the baby's uncle Prince Harry had been informed and are "delighted" with the news, the palace added. Kate was a number of days overdue and had been taken to the Lindo wing of St Mary's Hospital at 6 am from her nearby home Kensington Palace.

The princess is fourth in line to the throne, the Queen's fifth great-grandchild and a spare to the heir - and Prince George's sister. The Prince of Wales will be overjoyed as he made no secret he wanted his second grandchild to be a girl.

Before the birth William and Kate said they did not know the sex of their baby. The baby's name is yet to be announced but the favourites are Alice, which was the name of one of Queen Victoria's daughters and also of the Duke of Edinburgh's mother, and Charlotte - the feminine form of Charles - which could be chosen as a nod to William's father, the Prince of Wales.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge may also choose Elizabeth in tribute to the baby's great-grandmother the Queen or perhaps Victoria in honour of the baby's great-great-great-great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria.

The royal enthusiasts with their sweet treats:

It wasn't the delivery they were waiting for, but royal fans gathered outside the Lindo Wing of St Mary's Hospital were still delighted by a sweet delivery of cakes and pastries arranged by William and Kate on Tuesday morning. Kensington Palace has confirmed that the couple, upon hearing of those camping outside the hospital where the Duchess - née Kate Middleton - is to give birth, arranged breakfast so that the waiting crowds knew "they were thinking of them". The boxes of pastries were reportedly wrapped in a pink ribbon, in what may be a hint at the gender of the unborn child.

According to one Twitter report, royal fan Maria Scott said: "They knocked on the tent and said good morning, we have a present from the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge."

This isn't the first time William and Kate have shown their gratitude to royal well-wishers. Ahead of the couple's wedding in 2011, Prince William stepped out of Clarence House to greet those who were gathering ahead of the nuptials.

Catherine, Duchess Of Cambridge Leaves Buckingham Palace Yesterday

Kate Middleton And Prince George

The rest of us may be waiting impatiently for news of the royal baby, but it was business as usual for the Duchess of Cambridge today as she took Prince George swimming at Buckingham Palace. Swimming is said to help bring on labour, and the Duchess, who is almost a week overdue, may have tested that theory out if she joined her son in the pool. The Duchess looked relaxed behind the wheel of her Range Rover as she left at lunchtime, suggesting the Great Kate Wait may have some time to go yet.

Duke And Duchess Of Cambridge's Royal Baby No. 2 Birth Announcement Goes Modern

Duke And Duchess Of Cambridge's Royal Baby No. 2

If you're anxiously awaiting the arrival of Prince George's little sibling, then we hope you have a Twitter account. When Prince George was born, a royal spokesperson posted the announcement on that now-famous easel in front of Buckingham Palace, but this time around Prince William and Kate Middleton are eschewing tradition and going more mainstream. It is the 21st century, after all.

A palace aide explains that when the hotly anticipated baby is finally born at St. Mary's Hospital in London, first a press release will be sent out to members of the media covering the story, then an electronic message will be going out via the Twitter handle @KensingtonRoyal "a couple of minutes later." Tradition won't be completely bucked, however, as the print version of the announcement will still eventually be posted on the easel in front of the Palace - just in time for onlookers to take selfies with.

So when is this royal birth happening, you ask? The Telegraph reports that Kate's due date was Thursday, April 23 making her already four days overdue, and if Royal Baby #2 waits any longer, the Duchess of Cambridge just may be induced. A source whose children were also born in the same private wing of the hospital Will and Kate are expected to give birth at shared that "The doctors don't normally wait for more than a week [before inducing]." This would be the second time that Kate has gone past her due date, as Prince George was reportedly three days overdue himself!

And while the gender of the "spare" is not yet known, the current betting odds for a boy are 11:8 and girl is 8:15, with the name Alice as the most betted on. We guess only time will tell...

And the hashtag surrounding the little prince or princess-to-be? #royalbaby, of course!

Why Prince William And The Duchess of Cambridge Won't Name Their New Baby Charlotte

Prince William And The Duchess of Cambridge New Baby Name

The odds on the name being chosen still stand at 40/1, with Alice, Elizabeth and Diana also proving popular amongst betters if the 33-year-old royal gives birth to a Princess.

Britain's Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge won't be naming their second child Charlotte. According to top historian, Clarissa Campbell Orr from Anglia Ruskin University, who specialises in the British monarchy, the couple are unlikely to choose the name for the newborn if the child is a girl due to the unfavorable fates of previous royal figures with the moniker.

She told the Daily Express newspaper: 'There is a popular tide of opinion hoping that if it is a daughter she will be named Charlotte. However, from the point of view of the Royal Family, this is unlikely to be a particularly favourable name.'

'George III's wife, Sophie Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, was a very successful consort and weathered the disturbing episode of her husband's apparent madness, although her hair turned white with shock.'

The couples eldest daughter, Charlotte was also deemed a disappointment to the Royal Family after she married a Duke of Württemberg in Germany against their will. The odds on the name being chosen still stand at 40/1, with Alice, Elizabeth and Diana also proving popular amongst betters if the 33-year-old royal gives birth to a Princess. James currently stands as the favourite if the baby is a boy.
