The 89-year-old monarch visited the Kensington Palace home of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge after returning from a private weekend in Norfolk, but stayed for less than half-an-hour.

The meeting took place shortly after the birth of Charlotte Elizabeth Diana, born at 8.34am on Saturday weighing 8lbs 3oz, was officially registered.

As was the case with her older brother Prince George, Westminster city council's deputy registrar, Alison Cathcart, travelled to the couple's home to witness the signing of the register.

And, also as then, the couple's occupations were described as Prince and Princess of the United Kingdom. The duke and duchess are expected to decamp shortly to their country residence, Anmer Hall, on the Queen's Sandringham estate in Norfolk. The duke will take six weeks' unpaid paternity leave, before returning to his training as an air ambulance pilot.
